Made possible by the 2009 Woman’s Alliance grant, the YWCA Women’s Loan Program assists refugee and immigrant women in developing a small business to create and sell original arts and crafts products. A small business loan and business plan development training are core components of the program to guide in the success of each participant.

Eligibility:  Women of any age or ethnicity who have arrived in Sioux Falls as an immigrant or refugee, who have a passion and artistic skill to create a quality product to offer for sale, are eligible. A woman should be able to contribute some of her own funds towards her project and have the ability to repay the loan.

Loan Amount: A woman may receive up to $500 to purchase supplies for the development of a product(s) to sell.

Loan Term: One year. There is no interest on the loan. The loan is repaid through a defined repayment schedule and a percentage of each item sold over the course of one year.

Commitment: The small business owner must commit to developing a business plan for a long-term approach to creating and selling their products. This includes attending at least two training sessions and working with a consultant as needed. These services are free. The owner must have a willingness to accept supervision and technical assistance throughout the life of the loan, if necessary.

Process: An application must be completed in full to be considered. This includes financial information and showing an ability to complete the work and repay the loan. An interview will be scheduled to discuss the details of the product(s) to be created, to demonstrate product quality, and to fully discuss all responsibilities of a participant in the program.
