High School Girls Raise Money
Tradition Continues
"Spinsters” is a 75 year tradition of the YWCA where four junior girls and four senior girls from each of the Sioux Falls high schools work to make a difference in their community through volunteer service. The Spinster program provides life-skills learning for the 32 participants. In addition to the training, the Spinster board helps to organize an all high school dance where the girls ask the boys to be their escort. Over 1200 high school students attend the adult chaperoned dance to raise money for programs and services for youth in our community.
JUNIOR GIRLS CAN APPLY
Each fall, the YWCA accepts applications from high school junior girls interested in serving a two-year term on the Spinster board. Four junior girls and four senior girls from each high school - Lincoln, O’Gorman, Roosevelt, and Washington make up the board. Download information >>> and application here. >>>
In addition to planning the Spinster dance fundraiser, the girls also have the opportunity to attend life skills workshops. Applicants submit a complete application packet along with three references.
If you would like information on providing life-skills training to the Spinster board or are interested in ways to support the Spinster program, contact the YWCA Spinster advisor at (605) 336-3660.
