Kings and Queens announced at
YWCA Spinster Dance
(Sioux Falls) – Saturday evening, March 27, 2010 with approximately 1200 high school students in attendance at the YWCA Spinster dance, the student bodies from Lincoln, O’Gorman, Roosevelt, and Washington High Schools named the kings and queens of royalty.  The king and queen are chosen from a group of five girls and five guys from each school.

The 2010 Spinster kings and queens are:  Lindsey Brockhouse and Ochan Furula from Lincoln; Magie Dally and Stephen Ballard from O'Gorman; Hillary Johnson and James Kurtenbach from Roosevelt; and Morgan Berens and Elias Peterson from Washington.

“Spinsters” is a 70+ year tradition of the YWCA where four junior girls and four senior girls from each of the Sioux Falls high schools work to make a difference in their community through volunteer service.  Each year the group helps to organize an all high school dance.  This year 1200 student attended the dance to raise money for camp scholarships, provide childcare assistance for families in need, and help support refugee and immigrant women’s programs.

What is our mission?
To educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living

A little about us…
Girls on the Run is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls age eight to thirteen years old.The program combines training for a 3.1 mile run/walk event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goal of the program is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development.

Our Objective! The Girls on the Run objective is to reduce the potential display of at-risk activities among its participants. The goal is fewer body image dissatisfaction leading to eating disorders, less depression and suicide, as well as fewer substance/alcohol abuse problems and confrontations with the juvenile justice system.

Here is our approach –  Girls on the Run delivers its message to young girls through volunteer coaches and mentors. Our 10 week character development program teaches very specific and well-defined social and personal skills. Each program "season" ends with a non-competitive 5K run/walk event which gives the girls a chance to shine and a sense of goal accomplishment.
